Husky Swim Club (HSC) was founded on November 1st, 2019 by Isaac Fong. He was our first president, who single-handedly generated interest in the club, created our constitution, and started running practices– all as a first year student. It was his outstanding leadership that would lead the club on the road to success. HSC started as a very small group, but grew to a club of 50+ active members in only a few years.
In October 2021, Husky Swim Club made history by representing Michigan Tech in its first NCAA competition in 30 years since the team was disbanded in 1991. The meet involved 24 members traveling to Ripon, Wisconsin to take on Ripon and Loras College. Then in December 2022, Husky Swim Club made a name for itself by winning the men’s 200 medley relay at the Roger Ahlman Invitational in St. Paul, MN, showing every NCAA school present that HSC was a legitimate contender.
Practices typically run as follows: Mondays and Thursdays from 8-9:30 pm and Wednesdays from 7-8:30 pm
As a reminder, signing up for practices is required, as every week can be different! Please see the HSC practice sign up sheet for more details.
Practices last an hour and a half, and are run by our fantastic captains team. They will prepare workouts, and there are usually different options for you to choose from! With a value on flexibility, we want you to make practice work for you. Take things at your own pace.
A usual practice starts with the team meeting on the SDC pool deck 5-15 minutes before practice starts to socialize and prepare for swimming. This is followed by approximately 30 minutes of warmup, and then an hour of sets, followed by a short cooldown.
For the most part, that’s completely up to you. If any set is too tough or too easy for you, you can adjust it so you get the challenge you’re looking for. If you’re somebody that just wants to go take it easy, get some laps in and socialize, that’s awesome and we’re glad to have you! If you’re somebody that wants to train hard for the travel meets, that’s also really cool and you will be able to find others who want to train with you.
You will need to provide your own swimsuit, goggles and towel. There are usually swimmers with extra goggles if you need it for a day. We also use pull buoys and kickboards as standard equipment, but these are available for use at the pool.
No. Practice is always optional for members. We encourage you to come whenever you can. Many of our members try to make it 1-2 times per week, but you are always welcome to do more or less depending on your schedule and other priorities.
Travel meets are maybe the coolest thing we do. We usually target doing 3-4 travel meets a year. For these meets, a team of 30+ of us hop in and carpool anywhere across the midwest to compete! We usually stay at houses of our amazing members (free housing yay) for 1-2 nights depending on the meet. We eat amazing food, spend quality time together as a club and make unforgettable memories.
Depending on the meet, our budget, and other limitations, we may have to set limits on how many swimmers can attend a travel meet. We occasionally have to make cuts based on these limitations. Because of this, everyone is required to apply to attend travel meets.
Priority will be given first to leaders of the club. If you’re a first year, don’t let that discourage you! We also give priority to those who are active in our club. Simply put, if you really want to attend our travel meets, make sure you’re attending practice. It’s much less likely you’ll be selected if leadership doesn’t know who you are.
If you have any competitive swimming experience, yes you are. Most of our meets are against teams that also have a wide range of skill. If you don’t have much swimming experience and are concerned, please reach out to leadership. However, this is the bottom line - We don’t go to these meets to win, we go to have fun and spend time together as a club.
